This book examines in fine detail the circumstances under which the famous Damiano Checkmate succeeds and fails. In addition, I finely annotate more than 180 (!) games that include the combination.

Two years ago, I authored Sacking the Citadel. In addition to an exploration of the life and times of Gioachino Greco, I examined in some detail the conditions underlying the Classic Bishop sacrifice. My students found that, having read through just my classification of the sacrifice, they could quite quickly and accurately calculate those positions five to ten moves ahead. So too here.

There is an impressive chess literature with quite comprehensive coverage of openings, endgames, biographies, and important tournaments. Absent is comprehensive coverage of attacking themes, a dearth that this book continues to address.

Unlike many other inexpensive chess e-books, these are fully annotated in understandable, simple language. The profuse use of diagrams make these among the first chess books that you can read WITHOUT A BOARD at your side.

Jon Edwards won the 10th United States Correspondence Championship in 1997 and the 8th North American Invitational Correspondence Chess Championship in 1999.

These books are excellent---perfect for the kindle; simple to understand; short enough to digest in a quick read; and useful to use as a review of basic concepts. Very good for the Kindle and quite cheap---hope he produces more, and adding quizzes to the Kindle version, or writing a quiz book with the quiz on 1 page and the solution on the other, would be perfect. Strongly recommend this whole series of e-books.
